Abstract

994,590. Pipe couplings. GAS COUNCIL. March 9, 1964 [March 8, 1963; July 29, 1963], Nos. 9368/63 and 30002/63. Heading F2G. A sealing ring 5 surrounds a pipe 4 received in the socket 2 of a body 1 and a metallic ring 9 consisting of a number of circumferentially spaced projecting parts threaded on to a ring- shaped support also surrounds the pipe between the ring 5 and a nut 10 in screwed connection with the body. The arrangement is such that when the nut is tightened up the projecting parts of the ring 9 are forced inwards to grip or bite into the outside surface of the pipe as the ring is compressed between the ring 5 and the nut, and the ring 5 is compressed and held tightly in contact with the pipe and an annular surface of the body or on a part sealed to the body to form a seal between the pipe and the body. As shown, the body 1, which may be of right angular, cross, Y-, X- or T-shape, has an externally screwed socket 2 and an antifriction washer 7 is clipped over the sealing ring 5, and a second anti-friction washer 8 is disposed between the washer 7 and the ring 9 consisting of a helical spring bent into the form of an annulus and having a solid metal core, or a number of chamfered bead rollers, or rollers of spherical shape, threaded on a supporting ring of wire. In a modification, the nut 14 has a flange 13 against which an asbestos sealing ring 15 is compressed by a nut 17, an antifriction washer 16 being positioned between that washer and the ring 9.
