In a centrifugal pump, one of the side walls of the volute passage is constituted by one surface of a cover which presents a spigot engageable in the pump casing, the extent of penetration of the spigot in the pump casing being adjustable, in the direction of the pump axis, by the use of spacers or the like between the casing and the cover to permit the crosssectional area of the volute passage to be varied, and one of the side walls of the volute passage is in the form of a helical surface. In the centrifugal pump shown, the volute 2 is concentric with the impeller axis and of constant radial dimension, the increase of crosssectional area around the volute being obtained by providing a helical side wall 8. The other side wall 9 is flat and disposed in a plane at right angles to the impeller axis and is formed on a cover 10. If the pump is required to be of smaller capacity, the penetration of the cover spigot 12 into the pump casing 11 is increased by the use of a narrower spacer 13, thereby reducing the cross-sectional area of the volute. The blades of the impeller 5 are correspondingly reduced in width by machining the impeller casting on the unshrouded side. In the case of a double-shrouded impeller, the reduction of impeller width is obtained by the use of a different casting pattern. Pumping pressure may be altered by the use of an impeller of different diameter.
