Abstract

813,133. Centrifugal pumps. SMART, R. E. Feb. 19, 1957 [Aug. 9, 1956], No. 24436/56. Class 110 (1). A pump impeller comprises separate front and rear shrouds, and vanes formed wholly integrally with the front shroud or each formed of parts one integral with one shroud and another integral with the other shroud, the front shroud having a central boss, and all the vanes or parts of vanes integral with the front shroud running into the boss, the two shrouds being adapted to be held firmly together on the impeller shaft by screw-threaded means. In the impeller shown, the front shroud 1, the vanes 4 and the hub 3 are formed as a single casting, and the rear shroud 8 is formed separately. The two parts of the impeller are clamped together against a shoulder 14 on the impeller shaft by means of a cap or nut 16 fitting over a reduced portion of the shaft. The cap 16 may be held in place by a screw 17 threaded into the end of the shafts A key (not shown) engages keyways formed in the shaft, the hub 3 and the shroud 8. In a modification, a radially inner part only of each vane is formed integral with the front shroud 1 and hub 3, the remaining part of each vane being formed integral with the rear shroud 8.
