[Also in Division G3] Variations in the average density, during trimming, of the tobacco across the crosssection of that part of a filler stream to be left after trimming, are reduced by sensing variations in the mass per unit length of the filler stream and using the results to apply compensating pressure to the filler stream at least during the trimming operation. Cut tobacco is impelled upwards by an air current on to the underside of a perforated metal conveyer band 1 (Fig. 1) and held by suction provided by a pump connected by a pipe 5 to a chamber 4. The filler stream so formed is carried from right to left by the conveyer band I through an open channel bounded by opposed walls 9. The filter is trimmed by a device 6, comprising two co-operating discs, and passes on to a continuous paper strip 3 to be formed into a continuous cigarette rod. A sensing chamber 10 is connected by an open ended pipe 12 to the pipe 5. Compensatory pressure means (Fig. 2) comprise a chamber 13, with a duct 15 to a separate fan, and with a butterfly throttle valve 17 controlled by a bellows 20 (Fig. 3) connected by a pipe 21 to the sensing chamber 10. In a modification, the throttle valve 17 is replaced by a bleed valve which admits air from the atmosphere. A trimming device 6 (Fig. 1) is carried by an adjustable lever 51 connected at its left hand end to a nut member 53 which is actuated by signals from a #-ray scanning apparatus measuring the filler stream downstream of the trimming device as described in Specification 929,328. The #-ray apparatus may be used to operate, for example, the bleed valve instead of adjusting the trimmer height, and may be the sole control or may be in addition to the pressure sensed control. In a second embodiment, the compensatory pressure is applied by a roller acting on the underside of the filler stream below the position occupied by and replacing the chamber 13.
