953,728. Feeding tobacco. D. W. MOLINS, J. E. MORRIS, and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. April 14, 1960 [April 17, 1959], No. 13192/59. Heading A2C. A continuous rod cigarette-making machine comprises a travelling perforated conveyer 17, means to transfer the tobacco filler on to the conveyer whilst the filler is moving to the garniture 26, circulating means to draw an airflow through the filler and conveyer, and conditioning means to condition the airflow to result in the desired characteristics of the tobacco in the filler (e.g. moisture content). As shown the filler 16 from a hopper 10 is showered on to a conveyer tape 11 and is transferred via a bridge piece 20 to the conveyer 17 from which it is transferred over a bridge piece 22 to the cigarette paper web 21. The web is carried by a conveyer tape 23 to the machine garniture 26. The circulating means provided to draw an airflow through the filler and conveyer comprises a duct 27 open to atmosphere, a canopy 28, a suction chamber 29, a conduit 32, and a pump 30 having its outlet open to atmosphere. An electrical heating element 33 is provided in the duct 27 and an adjustable thermostat 34 to control operation of the element 33 has its sensing member 35 protruding into the canopy 28. The thermostat will allow current to be supplied to the element 33 to maintain a selected temperature of the airflow in the canopy. If desired, some of the airflow could be recirculated and also, if the moisture content of the tobacco is to be increased, water or other liquid may be injected into the airflow by a carburetter or wick device.
