The pressure drop across a tobacco filler, measured at 19, Fig. 1, is compared with that across a reference device 29 and variations in the difference cause adjustment of the trimmer blades 5. The filter is held by suction on a perforated conveyer 2 and a fan 22 draws air through a suction chamber 19 downstream of the trimmer 5 and through the reference device 29 which comprises a chamber with a restricted inlet. The pressures in the chambers 19, 29, are applied to a diaphragm 28 controlling a pressure amplifying device 33, 42, controlling a pressure responsive capsule 39 which actuates the control valve 81 of a hydraulic servomotor 11 to adjust the position of the trimmer blades 5. The apparatus for adjusting the blades 5 is similar to that of Specification 929,338. A rise in pressure in chamber 19, denoting a less dense portion of the filler, causes diaphragm 28 to rise which closes air bleed 36 in a compressed air pipe 35 to raise the pressure in pipes 35 and 38 whereby capsule 39 expands to cause servomotor 11 to move the discs 5 away from the band 2 to remove less tobacco and hence increase the amount of tobacco in the trimmed filler. The reference pressure device 29 comprises a chamber with a base with a number of slits 52, Fig. 3, therein which are controlled by an adjustable plate with similar slits, the pressure drop across the device being adjusted to that desired for the trimmed filler. A second suction device 6 may be used upstream of the trimmer 5 to sense variations in resistance to air flow of the untrimmed filter, the pressure variations being transmitted to a capsule 9 to adjust the trimmer as described in Specification 929,338.
