Abstract

953,792. Feeding tobacco. D. W. MOLINS, J. E. MORRIS, and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. April 14, 1960 [April 17, 1959], No. 13189/59. Heading A2C. In a continuous rod cigarette making machine an airflow, passed through cut tobacco moving between the hopper and the garniture of the machine, is conditioned to result in desired characteristics of the tobacco (e.g. moisture content). As shown a carded conveyer drum 10 receives cut tobacco in bulk and carries it past a refuser roller 11. A picker roller 13 impels the tobacco across a guide plate into the entrance of a duct 19. Suction means consisting of a perforated cylinder 16 rotating about two fixed members 17, 18, turns the tobacco stream into the duct 19. A perforated conveyer band 26 is provided at the top of duct 19 above which is a suction chamber 22. The band 26 and chamber 22 extend further (perpendicular to the plane of the Figure) than the width of the duct 19 so that air drawn into chamber 22 by a pump 32 flows partly through duct 19 and partly from atmosphere. A pump 23 draws air into a duct 15 through cylinder 16. Louvred plate 36 deflects dust and shorts into a pipe 39 connected to the inlet end of pump 32, and interposed in the pipe is a cyclone dust extractor 40. A dust extractor 37 and dust extracting cyclone 38 are provided at the outlet of pump 32. Air is discharged from a diffuser 47 and is drawn, together with some air from atmosphere, through a perforated plate 25 partly into the duct 19 and partly into duct 15. The airflow up duct 19 deposits the cut tobacco on to the band 26 to form the tobacco filler. Due to the work done on the airflow by the pumping means the air will be heated. Air conditioning means in the form of an electrical heating element 46 and a heat exchanger 41 connected to a refrigerator 42 are provided. The refrigerator 42 and the element 46 are controlled by a thermostat 48 through a relay device 52 to maintain the air passing through the duct at any desired temperature. If it is desired to increase the moisture content of the tobacco, water or any other liquid may be injected into the airflow by a carburetter or wick device. If desired the refrigerator 42 could be replaced by a radiator. Specifications 895,733 and 909,222 are referred to.
