Abstract

989,303. Concrete piles. L. F. A. MENARD. Oct. 10, 1962 [Oct. 13, 1961], No. 38301/62. Heading E1H. Piles are cast in situ by pouring cement grout into the hole for the pile as it is being bored, and after completion of the boring introducing a radially expansible element into the hole and expanding it to displace the grout against the wall of the hole and compress it until set, then withdrawing the expansible element and introducing load-bearing concrete into the resultant axial cavity. In one embodiment as the depth of the hole increases its walls are supported by pouring in a thixotrapic cement grout 6 (Fig. 2). When the bore is completed, a radially inextensible metal cage 7 and a radially expansible bag 8 are inserted into the hole. The bag is expanded to compress the grout against the hole wall, and after the grout has set the bag is deflated and withdrawn, leaving a central cavity which is filled with concrete 14 (Fig. 4) with or without reinforcement.
