984,235. Centrifugal pumps. SAMUEL PEGG & SON Ltd. Jan. 3, 1963 [Jan. 11 1962], No. 1045/62. Heading F1C. A centrifugal or other impeller-type pump comprises a casing having ports connectible to liquid flow conduits, a rotatable hollow valve shell mounted around the impeller and having a transverse internal partition which divides it into two compartments, viz., an outlet compartment which directly surrounds the impeller, and an inlet compartment in communication with the impeller eye, each compartment being furnished with aperture means for registration with ports in the casing, and means for turning the valve shell to bring the aperture means into registration with selected ports in the casing thereby to change over the direction of liquid flow through the ports and conduits thereto. In the centrifugal pump shown, the impeller 6 rotates within an inner cylindrical casing 12 which is mounted concentrically within an outer cylindrical casing 8 by means of stays 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>11</SP>. A control valve comprises a cylindrical shell 18 fitting within the inner casing 12 and carried by a disc 19 mounted on a spindle 23. The shell 18 is divided into two compartments A, B by means of a conical partition 26 disposed adjacent the front of the impeller. When the shell 18 is in the position shown, ports 29 and 30 in it are in alignment with ports 33 and 32 respectively in the inner casing 12. As shown by arrows C, liquid then enters the pump through a conduit 10 and passes through the ports 32, 30 and a central opening 27 in the partition 26 to the eye of the impeller. The impeller discharges the liquid through the ports 29, 33 to a conduit 9. When the valve is turned by means of a handle 25 to an alternative position in which the ports 29 and 30 align with ports 34 and 31 respectively, the flow through the conduits 9, 10 is reversed, as shown by arrows D. The flow can be throttled by turning the valve to vary the overlap between the ports in use.
