Abstract
997,863. Centrifugal pumps. B.S.A. HARFORD PUMPS Ltd. July 22, 1963 [July 24, 1962], No. 28402/62. Heading F1C. In a centrifugal pump comprising a by-pass passage through which some liquid at elevated pressure is bled off and returned to the inlet leading to the impeller, the by-pass passage is so arranged that the by-pass flow issuing from the passage into the inlet has a directional component which is opposed to the direction of the main flow through the inlet, so that the by-pass flow physically opposes and thereby restricts the main flow through the inlet. A circulating pump for a central heating system is controlled by returning part of the flow to the inlet 2 via a by-pass passage 10, under the control of a manually adjustable valve 12. The by-pass passage 10 is located midway around the volute 4 and is inclined at approximately 15 degrees to the axis of the inlet. The by-pass flow enters the inlet 2 in counterflow to the inlet flow, whereby a throttling effect is exerted to restrict the inlet flow, thereby augmenting the normal by-pass effect in reducing the pump output. Rotation of the by-pass valve 12 towards the closed position alters the angle at which the by-pass flow discharges into the inlet 2, whereby the effect of the counterflow in throttling the inlet flow is reduced. The discharge angle may be fixed. Instead of being continuously variable, the by-pass valve may have two positions only. Alternatively, a by-pass passage with a fixed angle and a fixed flow may be provided.
