In a hand - operated typewriter wherein the keys 4 are depressible in vertical planes perpendicular to the front of the machine and the type levers 9 move in radial planes about a common planar semi-circular pivot 10, an upwardly-directed pivoted arm 18 associated with each key lever 5 and lying in the same vertical plane is connected by a link 27 to a second arm 26 on a pivot 20 common to all the arms 26, the arm 26 being connected to its type lever by a link 22. The arms 26 which lie in the radial planes of the type-lever movements form parts of levers 19 and together with the arms 18 increase in length from the centre of the machine towards the ends, the ratio between the lengths remaining constant. The links 27 lie substantially in the lines of intersection 12, Fig. 1, between the radial planes and the corresponding key-lever planes and are all of the same length. The lines 12 lie on the surface of an imaginary cylinder 28, Fig. 2. The pivot 20 which is mounted in the type-lever basket 11 is coaxial with and in a plane parallel to the plane of the pivot 10; the plane of the pivot 20 bisects the angle of movement of the arms 26. The inner arms 21 of the levers 19 are all identical. As shown, the key-levers 5 are in three sets mounted respectively on three horizontal pivots 6, 7, 8, and the arrangement described provides for uniform depression of of the keys. Moreover, the various levers are acted upon by forces lying in the planes of the levers. In one modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the pivot 20 lies in the same plane as the pivot 10 and in another arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), the planes of the pivots 10, 20 approach the horizontal as is usual in a portable typewriter. The basket 11 is movable parallel to itself for ease shift.
