Abstract

784,561. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION Oct. 19, 1955 [Oct. 20, 1954], No. 29831/55. Class 100(4) in a typewriter having individually adjustable stops to engage the cam of each type bar, to vary its impression, actuation of the shift key brings a different set of stops into position for each case of the type bar whilst a separate key can bring other sets of stops into position for different typing conditions such as stencil cutting. The stops of the impression control mechanism 62 are individually adjustable as described in Specification 660,263 and each comprises a set screw mounted in slits 71 in spaced bosses 70 of a cylinder mounted on an eccentric part of a shaft 64. Separate rows of stops are provided for the upper and lower case positions and for different typing conditions and the impression of all the type bars derived from a particular row can be adjusted simultaneously by turning the eccentric part of the shaft 64 within the bore of the cylinder. Depression of the shift key acting through a lever 6, Fig. 3, moves the basket shift mechanism as described in Specification 655,492 and by a link 54 connected to the shift plate 30 moves a gear sector 58 which engages a gear 74 to turn the impression control cylinder 90 degrees to position the nex trow of stops in the operative position. Actuation of a button 106, Fig. 1, through arms 108 116, link 118 and yoke 120 will turn the cylinder 180 degrees so that two different rows of stops come under the control of the shift key when completely different typing conditions exist. The position of the stops is fixed after each movement by dentent mechanisms.
