The type-action of a small portable typewriter comprises key-letters 1 all pivoted on a pivot pin 2 held in a support 3 in the region of a type-lever nest 21 and which, through a projection 4 engaging a cam surface 5 of a transmission lever 6, transmits a key-action to an intermediate lever 12 situated well below the keylevers 1. The upwardly extending arms 14 of the central levers 6 are short, but extend for increasing distances upwards towards the sides of the machine and are bent inwardly towards the centre. Links 16 connecting the levers 12 to the type-levers 18 are substantially parallel to one another. Equal acceleration of the typelevers 18 is arranged by suitably arranging the shapes of the projection 4, the surface 5, a projection 8 and a surface 9 on the intermediate lever 12.
