A grinding apparatus comprises a rotatably mounted grinding element a having an abrasive peripheral surface, means c<SP>2</SP> for conventionally supplying coolant liquid to the grinding area when a workpiece c<SP>1</SP> is brought into contact with the surface, a hood b partially enclosing the element, additional means d for introducing cooling liquid to the interior of the hood at a point remote from the workpiece, and a deflector element l adjustably mounted within the hood to ensure that a substantially constant space is maintained between the element and deflector to enable the additional liquid to cool the surface of the grinding element and remove debris. The deflector element is curved to conform to the shape of the grinding wheel and has a sleeve m which is adjustably secured by a screw o to a bracket n on the hood and through which extends the additional means in the form of a nozzle d for the liquid. The ends of the deflector are adjustable relative to the hood by means of rods p extending into sleeves q on the hood, screws s adjustably securing the rods in the sleeves. As the grinding wheel wears, the sleeve m and rods p can be adjusted in the bracket n and sleeves q to maintain the deflector a predetermined distance from the surface of the grinding wheel so that the liquid richochets between the deflector and surface to cool and remove debris from the surface. In another embodiment, the rods p and sleeves q are omitted, the deflector being bent to conform to the contour of the grinding wheel, and an opening is provided in the deflector to enable some of the cooling liquid to enter the space between the deflector and hood to remove debris therefrom.
