Abstract

1,231,680. Grinding. CARBORUNDUM CO. 10 Nov., 1969 [20 Nov., 1968], No. 54876/69. Heading B3D. A manual snagging grinder comprises a grinding wheel 24 and a motor 18 mounted on opposite ends of a frame 17, means 14 mounting the frame for turning movement about an axis A extending longitudinally of the frame substantially through the point of engagement of the grinding wheel with a workpiece B, and means 4, 9 for supporting the frame so as to permit positioning of the grinding wheel with respect to the work. The frame is in the form of a bar 17 to one end of which a spindle is mounted carrying the grinding wheel 24 and to the other end of which brackets 19 are secured for carrying a plate 20, a further plate 21 being adjustably connected to plate 20 and carrying the motor 18 driving the grinding wheel by way of a belt or belts 27. The means 14 consists of a sleeve through which the bar 17 extends and which has an arm 15 mounted on a pivot 16 between a pair of arms 13 extending from the lower end of a column 1. The latter is carried by a journal 5 from a trolley 4 having rollers 7 mounted in tracks in a further trolley 9, in turn, having rollers 10 guided by a transverse track 11 supported by posts. The grinding wheel is enclosed by a guard 28 and a handle 34 is provided for manipulating the wheel to engage the workpiece B. A pneumatic cylinder 35 is provided and may be operative to assist in raising and/or lowering the grinding wheel. The grinding wheel can be rocked so that an edge thereof engages the workpiece by rotation of the bar 12 in the sleeve 14, the axis A of the bar sensing substantially through the arm of engagement of the grinding wheel with the workpiece. A spark shield 33 is provided to protect the motor.
