974,237. Packaging-machines; crating bottles. HOLSTEIN & KAPPERT MASCHINENFABRIK PHOENIX G.m.b.H. Oct. 19, 1962 [Dec. 15, 1961], No. 39560/62. Headings B8C and B8H. A gripper-operated packing or unpacking machine for bottles &c. has a double row conveyer belt for the crates 6, and grippers 4 suspended from a gripper head 2, with a displaceable section 17, attached to a carriage 5. In the packing operation bottles 3 are brought by a belt 10 on to a shelf 1, lifted a short distance by the grippers 4 under the action of a hydraulic device 13, and carried to a position over the crates by movement of the carriage 5. As the carriage nears the edge of its path, a stop shaft on the section 17 of the carriage engages stops on the machine frame, thus increasing the distance " t " between the two central rows of bottles to " t<SP>1</SP> " to allow for the extra width between the outside walls of two adjacent crates. The bottles are lowered into the crates and the grippers released and lifted. The carriage returns to its original position and the section 17 retracts under spring action or by the stop shaft thereon engaging a second set of stops on the machine frame.
