Abstract
970,461. Moulding helical coil springs. SACHSISCHE GLASFASER - INDUSTRIE WAGNER & CO. April 24, 1963, No. 16083/63. Heading B5A. In a method of moulding helical coil springs from glass fibre or otherwise reinforced synthetic plastics the plastic material is fed from an extruding nozzle 1 fitted with mouthpiece 9 into helical grooves 4 in a jacket 3 which is axially removable from a smooth polished inner core 2, the core 2 being hollow and fitted with an internal screw-thread which works on a fixed screw 5, so that rotation of the mandrel 3, 4 causes it to move axially. The external diameter of the core 2 defines the internal diameter of the finished coil. To prevent the molten plastic material from running out of the grooves, after winding a " Cellophane " (Registered Trade Mark), sheath may be wound over the jacket, or alternatively the plastic may be extruded through, e.g., a polyethylene sheath and retained in this in the groove 4. In a continuous process a flat strip of e.g. polyethylene is fed along with the plastics material into a funnel which wraps the polyethylene around the extruded plastic, the sheathed extrudate then being fed into a continuously axially moved rotating mandrel, which is formed from detachable sections.
