Abstract

1,197,595. Coating cores by extrusion. S. KANAO. 13 Sept., 1967 [29 Sept., 1966; 1 April, 1967 (2); 26 April, 1967], No. 41688/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] Flexible hose is made by helically winding, on a former consisting of a plurality of rows of rollers 3 mounted on a fixed shaft 2 such that each roller ia inclined tangentially with respect to the axis of the shaft 2, a hose forming strip D extruded in a semi-molten state from an extruder C and comprising a matrix 10 of soft synthetic resin material containing a reinforcing core 11 of synthetic material having a higher strength and hardness than the matrix material and a string member 12 having a lower elongation characteristic than the reinforcing core, at least one row of rollers being driven such that the strip is wound helically in close contact with the rollers and with adjacent convolutions whereby adjacent margins of the strip D are fused to form a flexible reinforced base. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-3, all the rollers are driven, the rollers at one end of each row being coupled by universally jointed shafts 5 to gears in a housing 1 which mesh with a central gear whose shaft 9 is coaxial with the shaft 2 and is driven by a motor, while the other rollers in each row are coupled to each other by further universally jointed shafts journalled in brackets on the shaft 12. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) only one row of rollers is driven, the remaining rollers being independently journalled in the brackets on shaft 2. The extruder C is of known type in that it comprises opposed inlets 14, 15 for matrix material and reinforcing core material, respectively. In order to introduce the string member 12, a bore 17 is provided coaxial with the outlet orifice 16, the bore passing centrally through an insert which is shaped to direct the two streams of plastic material into the desired relative positions one within the other. By applying tension to the string member, the latter is maintained within the stream of reinforcing core material. A second extruder F may be provided to extrude a further layer E of abrasion resistant synthetic resin to form an outer layer over the layer formed by the strip D, the arrangement being such that the convolutions of the layer E are staggered with respect to those of the strip D. Alternatively, the positions of the two extruders along the length of shaft 2 may be reversed so that the layer E is formed within the layer formed by the strip D.
