Abstract

1,105,830. Helically-wound containers; making articles by winding. M. HAWERKAMP. 21 Dec., 1965 [30 Dec., 1964], No. 54243/65. Headings B8D and B8G. [Also in Division F2] A tubular article, such as a container, is formed from a helically-wound composite strip 4 of plastics having a hollow reinforcing insert 4b defining a continuous helical ducting 11 within the wall of the container. The container is formed by extruding a hollow plastics strip (4a), Fig. 1 (not shown), around the hollow reinforcing insert, which may also be a plastics extrusion, and flattening the strip as it is wound on a mandrel (1) with overlapping convolutions so that internal ribs (12) on the insert, Fig. 5 (not shown), abut an opposite wall to define the ducts. The ducts may be used to carry a coolant to render the container capable of carrying materials at elevated temperatures.
