Abstract

967,738. Vacuum switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 11, 1961 [Aug. 23, 1960], No. 12548/64. Divided out of 967,737. Heading H2B. A vacuum switch has relatively movable contacts 22, 23 separable within fixed electrodes 20, 21 having facing cylindrical surfaces, the arc struck between the contacts being transferred to the electrodes and rotated along the electrodes by a magnetic field. The transfer of the arc is assisted by providing radially directed apertures 20a in the inner electrode 20 and by forming the electrodes of a metal having a lower arcing voltage than that of the contacts. The magnetic field may be provided by a coil energized by alternating or direct current or by a permanent magnet. The ends of the electrode surfaces may be curved.
