Abstract
1304443 Vacuum switches WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 11 Feb 1970 [20 March 1969] 6560/70 Heading H1N The fixed and moving contacts 7, 8 of a vacuum switch are provided with fixed coaxial cylindrical arcing electrodes 11, 12. The electrodes are shaped to provide a current loop which drives the arc from the separating contacts into the annular gap between the cylinders 11, 12 between which it moves until extinguished at current zero. The electrode 12 is connected to the contact 7 by a back contact surface 7b or by a flexible conductor (Fig. 2, not shown). The contact 8 may be the movable one in which case the bellows 14 can be located inside the hollow cylinder 11 (Fig. 3, not shown). Annular contact surfaces may be provided (Fig. 4, not shown). The cylinder 11 may be provided with helically arranged slots providing a magnetic field to rotate the arc in the gap (Fig. 6, not shown) or it may be replaced by a solid cylinder 33 (Fig. 5A, not shown) with portions cut away to form a + -shaped crosssection.
