Abstract

1,136,510. Vacuum switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 Jan., 1967 [9 Feb., 1966], No. 5670/66. Heading H1N. The contacts 8, 9 of a vacuum switch are surrounded by one or more isolated rings 21A-21D which during an interruption become sufficiently heated to release, under the electric field between the contacts, positive ions into the main arc gap thus reducing the arc voltage and assisting in preventing current chopping. The contacts 8, 9 are constructed generally as described in Specification 997,384. The rings are of 0À18 inch diameter, highly degassed copper wire and are supported on pressings 23A-23D of 0À064 inch thick nickel, copper or nickel-iron alloy. A cylindrical screen 25 is fitted.
