Abstract

A steel structure at the surface of a steel workpiece, such as each tooth of a band saw blade, is heated at such an energy density, e.g. at least 2 Kilowatts/sq. cm., from below 600 DEG C. up to a temperature between 1000 DEG C. and the solidus point or beyond for a period not longer than 0.1 second, e.g. by feeding the structure between the two turns of a high frequency induction coil heater, or by means of electric spark discharge, and immediately cooling the heated structure wholly or mainly by heat transfer to the body of the workpiece within 0.01 second from the maximum temperature down to below 600 DEG C. to form a microstructure, e.g. to a maximum depth of 0.02 inch, which is hard and corrosion resistant to acid and has a grain size below 5 microns and less than 2% austenite. The work-piece may be pre-cooled to accelerate cooling. The steel may be martensically pre-hardened and/or carburized or nitrided prior to heating.
