Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a high quality carbon material, which is not spalled even by sudden heating, in a high yield by closely covering the surface of a carbon material with a material having a specified heat conductivity and by heating the covered carbon material with radiant heat from a high temp. radiant heat source.
CONSTITUTION: Graphite core tube 1 in graphite powder 6 held by fire brick 5 is heated with power source 8. For example, when carbon material 4 treated at 850°C is further heat treated at 1000°C or above, tube 1 is heated to a max. temp. of 2500°C with the sharp temp. gradient of the diagram. Prior to the heating the surface of material 4 is closely covered with a material such as graphite material having a heat conductivity of 50Kcal/mH°C or more. Material 4 is put into tube 1 through preheating tube 3 and fed toward cooling tube 2 with pusher 3 while supplying N2 in the arrow direction. The resulting covered carbon material is not spalled even by sudden heat treatment, whereby equipment is reduced in size, and production time is shortened.
