Abstract

In a method of heat-treating the surface of a metallic work-piece, a small zone of the surface, comprising a point or a line, is subjected to heating by an electric current from a conducting member rolling over it, which heating does not substantially raise the temperature of the remainder of the workpiece. The rolling member may be in a disc or a roller and may have axial movement with respect to the article being treated. The heating may anneal, or, followed by quenching by a jet of cooling medium, harden the surface or may temper work previously hardened. As an example a railway wheel which has become flattened may be annealed, turned and finally hardened. The method may also be applied to the hardening of gear teeth, rolls for rolling mills, bolts or shafts.
