Abstract

Poorly-coking coals are carbonized to obtain metallurgical coke of high quality in a process which comprises drying ground coals at a temperature greater than 100 DEG C. but below the pyrolysis temperature of the coal, adding a hydrocarbon binder in liquid or viscous state before or after drying the coals, changing the mixture thus obtained into a coke furnace, and coking in conventional manner, the already high charging density of the initial dry coal being artificially increased to obtain changing densities greater than those which can be obtained by conventional dry changing, and may be greater than those which are obtained by the conventional stamping method for these same wet coals, for example by stamping the hot mixture prior to changing, or briquetting of the hot mixture and stacking prior to changing into a bunker of the stamping bunker type, or by briquetting a portion of the dry mixture and gravity feeding together with dry fines. Anti-cracking agents, such as a mixture of ground coke breeze and semi-coke, may be added to the mixture. The hydrocarbon binder may be coal tar pitch, artificial pitch obtained by hydrogenation, bitumen, residues or extracts from solvent extraction of pitch, bitumen, or resins, or extracts from coal, peptized coal, pitch, bitumen, or resin, or residue from the distillation often polymerized by an acid.
