Abstract
Prodn. of coke is carried out by (a) mixing a caking coal with a poor- or non-caking carbonaceous material (I) and grinding the mixt., (b) heating to 100-300 degrees C and adding a minor amt. of binder, (c) compressing the mixt. to >=1.0 t/m3 while still hot, and (d) coking the prod. in normal manner. (I) can be petroleum coke, lean or forge coal, coke fines, or a mixt. of these. Materials contg. 2% volatiles are pref. ground to 0.5 (esp. 0.2) mm. The binder can be a coal-tar pitch or petroleum bitumen with a softening point of 100 degrees C (pref. 60 degrees C). The process produces coke with a high density and good mechanical properties (e.g. suitable for use blast or cupola furnaces) using relatively large amts. of poor- or non-caking material.
