Abstract

962,277. Bearings; shafts. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Feb. 12, 1962 [Feb. 14, 1961], No. 5247/62. Headings F2A and F2U. In a means for cooling a bearing particularly the gas bearing of a turbo-machine with a hollow shaft where the blade-wheel is located near said bearing, a heat distribution and cooling element is inserted into the hollow shaft with which it makes good contact. In an embodiment, the blade-wheel 1 is attached by screws 7 to the hollow shaft 2 which is mounted in bearings 3, 4 and a cooling element 8 is positioned within each bearing. The element may be a hollow cylinder with a slot 13, Fig. 3 ; may have cooling ribs 12, Fig. 4 ; may have slots 14 in the ribs 12, Fig. 5; and is made of material having good thermal conductivity. The shaft 2 has ducts 9 therein through which heat escapes and an insulation layer 11 is provided between the shaft and the wheel. In operation, gas is sucked in by the rotating shaft, absorbs heat from the bearing, passes through the ducts 9 to a water-cooled gas cooler 6 and is returned to the hollow shaft via a connection 5.
