960,664. Pipe &c. couplings; screws. COMPAGNIE PARISIENNE D'OUTILLAGE A AIR COMPRIME. March 14, 1962 [March 15, 1961], No. 9825/62. Headings F2G and F2H. A coupling for a tube, pipe, rod &c. comprises an internal shouldered socket for the reception of the tube 2 and a packing ring 4, and there is at least one pressure element such as a screw 6 extending through the wall of the coupling, the orientation and shape of the screw permitting the exertion simultaneously directly of a radial pressure on the wall of the tube and indirectly of an axial pressure on the packing 4 secured against the shoulder 11; the pressure on the packing is transmitted by a washer 5 the surface of which orientates the pressure forces on the packing parallel to the axis of the tube. As shown, the screws are inclined to the axis of the tubes and produce indentations in the tubes; alternatively, grooves are machined in the tubes. In a modification, the screws are disposed perpendicularly to the axis of the tube and act on inclined faces of the rings 5. The screws may be of hardened steel cr a synthetic plastic and have a shouldered end, a chamfered end provided with a conical recess, Fig. 3, a flat end, or a spherical tip which may be mounted on a swivel joint, Fig. 6; the screws may be headless and have a pointed end. Rods exerting a compression force by the use of springs may be substituted for the screws. Locking of the screws is effected by lock washers or by wiring together of the screw heads.
