Abstract

958,472. Piston rings. SEALED POWER CORPORATION. Jan. 25, 1963 [Feb. 5, 1962], No. 3194/63. Heading F2T. A piston oil-control ring 24, comprises spaced scraping lands 28 and 30 and recesses 36 which extend across the bottom surface 38 of the ring and each form an oil drainage passage having an open bottom. The ring 24 is split and is urged radially outwards by a coil spring expander 26 located in a groove 44 in the inner peripheral surface of the ring and having its ends 46, 47 aligned by a wire 48. The drainage passages 36 are formed by spaced pads 34, the opposed side walls 52 and 54 of adjacent pads converging radially inwards. The lands 28 and 30 are tapered and plated with a coating 33 of chromium; oil drainage openings 22 are provided in the piston between the bottom 20 of the ring groove 14 and the interior of the piston. In a modification, Fig. 6, the ring 60 is urged outwardly by a radially corrugated split band 62 of spring steel supported from the lower wall 18 of the groove 14 by spaced integral legs 70.
