1302347 Piston rings RAMSEY CORP 9 Feb 1971 4273/71 Heading F2T An expander-spacer ring 10 for piston rings 17, 18 comprises circumferentially spaced spring sections 21 integrally connected by axial lands 22, each section 21 having top and bottom lands 35, 36 integrally connected by axial lands 37, and an integral tongue 23 projects radially outwardly from one of the lands 37 to extend between the lands 35, 36. Each section 21 is of U-cross-section and the lands 35, 36 are U-shaped. The tongue 23 has intermediate tabs 32 and at its free end, tabs 29, 30 which project axially beyond the lands 35, 36. Oil drainage holes 38 may be provided in the lands 22. In use, the piston rings 17, 18 are supported adjacent their outer peripheries by the tabs 29, 30 and at their inner peripheries by tabs 24 extending from lands 22 and inclined so as to urge the rings 17, 18 outwardly and against the walls 40, 41 of the ring groove 11. The ring 10 is made from metal strip (10a, Fig. 3). To prevent overlapping of adjacent sections 49, 50 at the split in the ring 10 during installation, portions 48 of one section 50 extend between the tabs 32 and 29 and 30 of the tongue 23 of the other section 49 and are positioned radically inwardly of shortened leg portions 44 and 45 of section 49. In a modification, Fig. 8, the tongue 63 does not extend beyond the higher portions 64 of the lands 65 which latter have tabs 67 for supporting the outer peripheries of the piston rings.
