Variations in the uniformity of a continuous layer of tobacco, e.g. in a continuous rod cigarettemaking machine, are detected by passing air through the tobacco and over an electrical element, one of whose characteristics, e.g. resistance, varies with temperature. A perforated conveyer belt 2 passes through a chamber 3 adjacent the end of a narrow passage 1. Air is continuously drawn out of chamber 3 so that when a stream of air and cut tobacco is passed through passage 1 the tobacco forms a layer held by suction on the under-side of belt 2. The belt then passes under a chamber 6 containing a hot wire resistance element 50 (of tungsten) and air is drawn through the tobacco layer and conveyer belt over this element. As the air-permeability of the tobacco layer varies so the airflow over element 50 varies, causing a corresponding variation in its resistance. Element 50 is connected in series with a regulated power supply unit 53 and a load resistor 58, and a reference standard 54 sensitive to the ambient temperature compensates for changes in the temperature of the airstream over element 50. Across resistor 58 is connected aD.C. amplifier which feeds a positional solenoid 64. Armature 65 operates the input member 10 of a hydraulic amplifier 11 whose output member 13 operates trimming discs 5 which remove excess tobacco from the belt. Specification 929,338 is referred to.
