[Also in Groups VI and XL (b)] A main tobacco stream being forwarded by a belt 24 (Fig. 4) to a continuous-rod cigarettemaking machine has its amount gauged by a radiation and/or dielectric device 25 so that any variations therein may be compensated by corresponding variation in a subsidiary tobacco stream added from a hopper 37. The device 25 controls the speed of a pin-wheel 30. A section of the main tobacco carpet on a belt 6 passes to a vibrator shoot 19 feeding hopper 37. In a modification the shoot 19 is fed by a conveyer 42 (Fig. 5) in the main stream hopper which intercepts a variable quantity of tobacco under the control of a pivoted plate 43 positioned according to the fullness of hopper 37 as indicated by a capacity probe or light-sensitive device therein.
