A roof, ceiling, platform, floor or other area covering structure comprises sheets arranged in regular geometrical patterns to form units of full or truncated pyramids or cones interconnected along their basal edges and with a system of ties connected between the apexes. Units which comprise sheets 23, Fig. 5, and may have a different number of sides, are provided with flanges 14, Figs. 2, 2a by which they are connected together along their basal edges while the apexes are connected by ties 28 thus forming a grid 15. The ties are secured to a domed cap 20, Fig. 4, which is secured to the apex by a clamp 22 with an interposed washer 26. The space between the corners of the pyramids may be covered by sheet strips 30, 31. Fig. 6. When the structure is to be supported on columns the stresses at the support points may be distributed by cast units 35, Fig. 8 comprising limbs 36-39 and reinforcing plates and angle members 40, 41. The unit flanges may be connected together by bolting, riveting, welding, gluing or other means and in the case of conical units they may be connected by triangular plates with concave sides. Any suitable sheet material may be used such as thin gauge steel or aluminium, plastics, plywood, reinforced cardboard fibre, asbestos or glass. The open ends of the units are covered by flat or corrugated sheeting of the same or different material attached to the flanges. The construction has special accoustic advantages, may be made of translucent or transparent plastics of various colours and may when appropriate be used with the apexes uppermost.
