Abstract

465,876. Roofs ; metal plates. GUYON, Y. Sept. 18, 1935, Nos. 25903 and 25904. Convention dates, Sept. 22, 1934 and April 4, 1935. [Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] Structures such as aircraft hangars and sheds, having large surfaces subjected to loads approximately normal thereto, are constructed so that such surfaces are in the form of surfaces of double but opposite curvatures, i.e. so that, e.g. transverse sections are concave downwards, whereas longitudinal sections are concave upwards. The surface may be formed directly from a continuous sheet or from a number of interconnected sheets, or may be formed by attaching a covering to a network of interconnected girders. The surface may be built of plane quadrilateral plates secured to girders formed as a system C1, C2, Fig. 1, or the plates may be folded along a diagonal XX, Fig. 2, to form non-coplanar triangles T1, T2 whose edges are secured to the girder system L1, L2. A separate girder system may be rendered unnecessary by bending the edges of the plates to form girder sections 1a, Fig. 3, such as channels, which are secured together. The sections may be formed all on one face of the plate, so that one face of the resulting surface may be continuous, or two sections along opposite edges may be formed on each face of each plate, so that when the plates are joined, longitudinal girders are on one face and transverse girders are on the other face of the surface. Corrugated plates may be used instead of plane plates, the corrugated plates overlapping at their ends and being secured to a girder system. Instead of plane quadrilateral plates, plates with two or more curved edges and shaped to a curved surface may be used. In some cases plane or curved plates may be suspended at their ends on girders' and allowed to hang in a natural curve to take up the position in which they are secured in the structure. Some of the metal plates may be replaced by glass, fibre or canvas, or by thin concrete slabs, and diagonal stiffeners may then be placed in the quadrilaterals so filled. The roof of a shed may be formed by straight rafters 15a, 15b, Fig. 10, arranged as the ruled lines on a hyperboloid of revolution, a canvas covering being secured to the rafters. Compression members, referred to in the Specification as tympans may be fitted on the edges of the surface to take thrusts arising from the transmission to the framing of the loads applied to the structure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 included further examples of particular surfaces and rafter or girder systems thereon, but these are not included in the Specification as accepted.
