Abstract

953,851. Seaming, bending, metal strip feeds. X. LIPP. Jan. 15, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 1874/63. Headings B3E, B3J and B3W. A method of connecting the edges of thin sheets by folding comprises leading the sheets with their edges to be joined in parallel overlapping relationship to a former which bends each edge into an acute angle and pressing the bent edges together with the angled edges hooked into one another to form a connecting fold. The edges of two metal sheets are fed along horizontally disposed overlapping grooves 2, 3 extending from opposite sides of a machine frame body 1, above and below a guide body 43 over which the edges are bent to about 90 degrees by a pair of flanged rollers 28, 29, along inclined guide tracks 45, 46 adjacent a rhomb shaped guide body 44 about which the edges are bent into an acute angle and between a grooved pressure roller 51 and a plain roller 52 which fold the edges together, Fig. 10. The rollers are intermittently reciprocably driven via horizontal slide rods 16, 17 coupled to a member 15 which is driven by a motor (not shown) and crank 11, fitted to the rods are a plurality of spring biased levers 36 the ends of which engage toothed rims 35 &c. fitted to the outer faces of the rollers to effect rotation thereof. The guides 43, 44 are arranged in sequence immediately after the grooves 2, 3 and the peripheries of the roller 28 are tangential to the upper face of the groove 2 and the lower face of the guide 43, the lower roller 29 is similarly positioned relative to the groove 3 and guide. In a modification the rollers 28, 29 guides 43, 44 and their associated drive arrangement are replaced by a reciprocating die 71 which co-operates with a pair of wedge shaped grooves 74, 75 arranged in upper and lower parts of the guide body to form the edges, Fig. 12. The seams of pipes, arched or flat articles comprising one or more sheets may be made by the method.
