Abstract
1456530 Corrugating; shearing; making sheet metal panels B & K MACHINERY INTERNATIONAL Ltd 7 Dec 1973 [7 Dec 1972] 56763/73 Headings B3E B3A and B3W A sheet metal panel cut to length from strip comprises a central portion 11 and two side portions 12, Fig. 1, the latter having continuous roll formed longitudinal formations extending from one end to the other, and the central portion having a plurality of identical transverse corrugations 13 terminating just short of the longitudinal folds, and flat end portions 14. The panel edges may have interengageable formations for assembly of the panels, and the transverse corrugations may be interrupted by a central longitudinal folded formation (Fig. 4, not shown). The first station of a production line is shown in Fig. 6, where incoming strip S is fed over braked bridle rolls 20, 21 with snubbing rolls 23, and through cold working rolls 29, 30 backed up by rolls 25, 27, the lower rolls being disengageable as required by jack 32 and adjustable in height by jack 36. The lower work roll 30 is of a length equal to the width of the central portion of the strip, so that the side portions do not get worked to the same extent. The strip then passes to transversely corrugating rolls 38, 39, the latter engageable by jack 40, where the central portion is transversely corrugated as required, and thence to rolls 44, 45 which apply tension to the corrugated strip against the back tension of the bridle rolls. Thereafter, the strip is longitudinally formed along its side portions, and cut to length by a flying shear (not shown). Passage of the strip is recorded by a measuring device and counter, which intermittently disengages the cold working, transversely corrugating, and tension applying rolls, whereby the required flat regions are left in the central portion of the strip, and a datum hole is punched in the strip. Downstream of the longitudinal forming rolls, a hole detector ensures that operation of the flying shear divides the strip in the flat central regions. The speed of the motors driving the various rolls and the shear are monitored and co-ordinated. Fig. 11 shows an alternative transverse corrugating device, in which die elements 82 are attached to endless belts 80, 81 running over convergent guides 85, 86, while the strip edges are held flat by rolls 78, 79. One belt guide roll 73 is adjustable by block 74 and by cam 75. Adjacent die elements are linked together to reduce forces on the belts. Fig. 13 shows another alternative, in which a corrugating roll 99 cooperates with die elements 91 on belt 90 passing over a needle roller bed 100.
