Abstract

934,816. Pneumatic separating. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. May 15, 1961 [May 16, 1960], No. 17182/60. Class 117. [Also in Group VI] Winnowing apparatus for a cigarettemaking machine includes a picker roller 4 which moves tobacco from a carded roller 1 and throws it across a plate 6 towards a perforated rotating roller 7 and a vertical channel 9 up which an airstream is drawn to carry off the light particles, while heavier particles strike a wall 15 of a chamber 35 and fall through an opening 36 to a rotary valve 38 which leads them to a rotary sifting device 40, 41. The light particles drawn through the channel 9 are received on a perforated conveyer tape 10 on which a tobacco filler is formed as described in Specification 895,733. The rotary sifting device consists of two rows of interculated discs 40, 41 having serrated edges and arranged so that smaller pieces pass between them and fall to a rotary valve 44 which feeds them to a plate 45 leading to a passage 46. A second airstream is drawn up the passage 46 and carries the lighter particles to the stream of material leading towards the channel 9. The large pieces of stem &c. are carried by the discs 40 to a passage 48 having a rotary valve 50 leading to a conveyer 52. A third airstream is drawn upwardly through the passage 48 and a further passage 63 to carry off any light material to the channel 9. Air is drawn into the apparatus via perforated plates 14, 64 and an adjustable aperture 65. A wall of the passages 48 and 63 are adjustable to regulate the airflow therethrough. A member 8 has guides or vanes 8A along its length to cause the air entering the channel 9 to flow with a component in the direction of movement of the tape 10. The general layout is shown in Fig. 1, and cut tobacco is contained in a reservoir formed between a wall 2 and carded rollers 1 and 3. Suction in the channel 9 is produced by a fan 12, augmented by a fan 19 connected by a pipe 20 and branch 20a to the upper end of the channel 9 as described in Specification 916,141. The fan 19 also provides a circulation of air through the perforated cylinder 7, duct 53 and a box 60 with a screen 61, as described in Specification 895,733; such air flow assists in blowing the light particles towards the inlet of the channel 9. A dust separator 23 in the pipe 20 has an outlet pipe 24 connected to the inlet of the fan 12 whereby the dust is carried to cyclones 13.
