Apparatus for measuring the moisture content of material such as tobacco comprises a vibratory feed duct 1 within which a measuring duct 3 comprising only a fraction of the crosssection of the feed duct and preferably having a "V" cross-section, the measuring duct containing capacitor plates 4, 4a. Tobacco from a conveyer fills the measuring duct to a substantially constant level determined by the dwell angle of the material, any surplus spilling into the side portions 10. A moisture dependent signal from the capacitor plates is modified by a temperature sensitive device within the duct and may be used to control the temperature of a drying oven.
