Abstract

950,608. Ammunition cartridges. MILITARY TRAINING DEVICE CO. A.B. July 27, 1960 [Aug. 14, 1959], No. 26203/60. Heading F3A. An ammunition cartridge is provided containing a layer of an organic substance surrounding the charge which, on combustion of the charge, reacts with the propellent gases, to form a layer of relatively cool gas between the propellent gases and the gun barrel. The organic substance is situated at the forward end of the charge and extends over at least one-twentieth of the charge's length and is between 0.05 and 30% by weight of the charge weight. Among the substances mentioned are wax, alkyd resin paint and cellulose and in Fig. 1 a layer 4 of alkyd resin paint is shown attached to the casing 1 and in Fig. 2 a cellulose enamel coating 7 is shown on a container 5 holding the charge. An empirical formula for determining the amount of substance to be used is given and the results of experiments to determine the reduction in barrel wear are also disclosed. The charge may be enclosed in a fabric container, which is coated with the organic substance, or a length of textile material impregnated with the substance may be wound around the charge.
