Class 9(1) A cartridge comprises a projectile 1 fitted in a case 2 provided with a percussion cap 3 and containing a composite propellant charge 4, 5 the part 4 of the charge being very fast-burning and so chosen that it is completely consumed when the maximum pressure is reached in the gun. The charge 4, which may be flakes, grains or tubes of powder, has a forward taper so that as it burns the burning surface area decreases. To further reduce wear in the gun, the charge 4 may be a powder having a low combustion temperature. The main charge 5 may be split up into charges 5a, 5b, the charge 5a being faster than 5b but slower than charge 4. This intermediate charge may be sandwiched between the charge 4 and the charge 5b or arranged as an annular sheath 7, Fig. 3, separated from an extension of the main charge 6 by a tube 8 formed with protruberances 9 for positioning the tube in the case. Part or all of the charge 4 may surround the tube 8. At least one of the partial charges may be a tubular powder treated on the outer surface with a phlegmatizing agent.
