Abstract

An anionic exchanger resin consists of a cross-linked copolymer comprising a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon and a divinyl hydrocarbon which contains quaternary ammonium groups and one or more -CN, -COOR, -COOH and -SO3R groups, where R is an alkyl. Anionic exchanger resins are produced by copolymerizing the monovinyl and e.g. 0.5-5% mol divinyl hydrocarbon and a vinyl monomer containing the above polar groups or -SO3H, e.g. 0.02-0.3 mol. polar groups/mol. quaternary ammonium group, and the copolymer is then chloroalkylated, e.g. with monochlorodimethyl ether or aldehyde and HCl in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and then aminated with a tertiary amine, e.g. trimethylamine or dimethylethanolamine. The monomers may be styrene and divinylbenzene or butadiene, and may be polymerized using azodiisobutyric acid nitrile. The polar group containing vinyl monomer may be ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile or a styrene sulphonic acid ester. The -COOR, -CN and -SO3R groups may be saponified after polymerization and before chloroalkylation. The resins may be used for decolorisation.ALSO:Sugar juices, e.g. a brown-coloured dilute solution of molasses, are decolorized by the use of an anionic exchanger resin consisting of a cross-linked copolymer comprising a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon and a divinyl hydrocarbon which contains in addition to quaternary ammonium groups, one or more polar groups, viz., -CN. -COOR, -COOH, -SO3H or -SO3R, where R is an alkyl radical.
