Abstract

In the production of anion-exchange resins, styrene or other mono-vinyl aryl compound such as acenaphthylene is polymerized in the presence of a cross-linking agent by the method of pearl polymerization to yield small spheres or beads, and anion-exchange properties are then imparted to the spheres or beads, the cross-linking agent being one of (a) a diester of acrylic acid or an alpha-substituted derivative of acrylic acid, such as ethylene dimethacrylate and glyceryl dimethacrylate or diacrylate, (b) a divinyl ester of a dibasic acid such as divinyl oxalate, (c) divinyl ether, and (d) a vinyl ester of either acrylic acid or an alpha-substituted derivative of acrylic acid such as vinyl methacrylate. Anion-exchange properties may be imparted by haloalkylation followed by amination. More than one mono-vinyl aryl compound or more than one cross-linking agent may be employed and polymerization may be effected in aqueous medium in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and kaolin. Haloalkylation may be carried out by treating the copolymer with chloromethyl ether in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst or by using a monovinyl aryl compound containing alkyl groups substituted in the nucleus, such as methyl styrene, and halogenating these alkyl groups by reacting with a halogen, preferably chlorine.
