Abstract
An ion-exchange material consists of a loose fibrous mass, e.g cotton-wool or asbestos fibres, having an ion-exchange resin supported on and in the fibres produced by absorbing on to and into the fibres the constituents of the resin and then polymerizing the constituents in situ or by absorbing on to and into the fibres the constituents of a resin, polymerizing these constituents in situ to form the resin and introducing ion-exchange groups into or forming them in the resin. The fibrous material may be treated with a mixture of styrene and divinyl benzene which are polymerized in situ in the presence of H2O2 or benzoyl peroxide and water, the resin formed then being modified to introduce cation- or anion-exchange groups by sulphonation or chloromethylation or amination. Alternatively the fibrous material may be impregnated with acrylic or methacrylic acid and a crosslinking agent and polymerization effected or with acrylonitrile or an acrylic ester e.g. ethyl and a crosslinking agent e.g. divinylbenzene, hydrolysis to form carboxyl groups being effected after polymerization. The ion-exchange materials may be used as precoats on filters used in processes for the removal of impurities present in liquid in very small quantities.ALSO:An ion-exchange material consists of a loose fibrous mass, e.g cotton-wool or asbestos fibres, having an ion-exchange resin supported on and in the fibres. The material may be produced by absorbing onto and into the fibres the constituents of the resin and then condensing or polymerising the constituents in situ or by absorbing onto and into the fibres the constituents of a resin, polymerising these constituents in situ to form the resin and introducing ion-exchange groups into or forming them in the resin. The fibrous material may be treated with a mixture of styrene and vinyl benzene which are polymerised in situ the resin formed then being modified to introduce cation-or anion-exchange groups by sulphonation or chloromethylation or amination. Alternatively the fibrous material may be impregnated with acrylic or methacrylic acid and a crosslinking agent and polymerisation effected or with acrylonitrile or an acrylic ester and a crosslinking agent, hydrolysis to form carboxyl groups being effected after polymerisation. The resin may also be a condensation product of phenolsulphonic acid and formaldehyde, of a salt of phenolsulphonic acid, a phenol and formaldehyde or of guanidine, acetone and formaldehyde, the fibrous material being treated first with a solution of the phenolsulphonic acid, salt of phenolsulphonic acid and phenol or guanidine and acetone and then with a solution of the formaldehyde or a resin precondensate first being formed and applied to the fibrous material and the condensation completed by heating. The ion-exchange materials may be used as precoats on filters used in processes for the removal of impurities present in liquid in very small quantities.
