A method of making a zirconium carbide point cathode comprises making a point shaped metal support of e.g. tungsten, molybdenum, platinum, or rhenium, and evaporating thereonto a refractory metal such as zirconium and carburizing in an organic atmosphere of benzene or naphthalene.
