Abstract

1,155,159. Cathode materials and processing. SIEMENS A.G. 4 Aug., 1967 [5 Aug., 1966], No. 35914/67. Heading H1D. [Also in Division C7] In an indirectly heated dispenser cathode of the metal capillary type in which emissive material migrates through the pores in a porous plate from a dispenser arranged behind the rear surface of the plate to spread over the emissive surface of the porous plate, the porous plate is formed of carbon and its emissive surface has an intermediate layer of one or more of the carbides of Mo, W, Ta, Ti or, particularly, Zr and an outer metal coating of tungsten and/or a platinum-group metal. As shown, the porous plate 1 of the main cathode is heated by electron bombardment from an auxiliary dispenser cathode 6 which also serves as the supply of emissive material, e.g. barium, for the carbon plate 1. The zirconium carbide layer 11 may be formed on the carbon plate 1 by immersing the plate in a 4% solution of zirconium acetylacetonate, decomposing the zirconium compound so deposited in a dry hydrogen atmosphere for about 10 minutes at 1200‹ C., spraying at least that surface of the plate which is to receive the metal coating with a suspension of zirconium in butyl acetate to form a compacted zirconium carbide layer and annealing the plate in vacuo at 1800‹ C.
