Abstract

A composition comprises an organic film-forming or fibre-forming compound and a compound of the formula: <FORM:0948627/C3/1> where X is COOH, COOMe (Me=alkali metal or N base), COO alkyl, CO alkyl, CONH alkyl, CON(alkyl)2 or CN and Y is phenyl COOH, COOMe (Me as above), COO alkyl or CO alkyl group. Specified film-forming materials are polyacrylic and methacrylic acids, copolymers of acrylic-, methacrylic-, maleic-, or fumaric acid esters with acrylic-and methacrylic acids, maleic and fumaric acid semi-esters, polyvinyl alcohol, partially saponified copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, sulphonated polystyrene and polyacrylamide. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyethylacrylate, polyacrylonitrile, polyamides, polyurethanes, polymeric caprolactam, nylons polyethylene, terephthalates polyaddition products of glycol and diisocyanates, gelatine, casein, and polyesters produced from dihydric alcohols and alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids (with liquid monomers, e.g. styrene, methyl methacrylate) which are then polymerised. Specified additives have (1) X=CN, Y=COOH, (2) X=CN, Y=COO Na, (3) X=CN, Y=COOC2H5 (4) X=COOH=Y (5) X=COONa=Y, (6) X=COOCH3=Y (7) X=COONH3C6 H11=Y (8) X=COONH3C4H9Y (9) X=COONH3C18H37=Y (10) X=COOH, Y=C6H5 (11) X=COONa, Y=C6H5 (12) X=COOH3, Y=C6H5, (13) X=COOC2H5, Y=C6H5 (14) X=COOC3H7, Y=C6H5 (15) X=COOC4H9 (iso),Y=C6H5, (16) X=COOC5H11 (iso), Y=C6H5, (17) X=COOCH2CHOHCH3, Y=C6H5, (18) X=COOCH2CH(OH)CH2CH2OH, Y=C6H5, (19) X=COCH3 Y=C6H5, (20) X=CONHCH2CH2OH, Y=C6H5, (21) X=COOH =Y and the phenyl group has a Cl in the orthoposition and (22) X=COOC2H5=Y, again with an ortho chlorine. Specification 746,063 is referred to.ALSO:Anti-fading agents which absorb ultra-violet light and have the general formula <FORM:0948627/A5-A6/1> where X is COOH, COOMe (Me = alkali metal or N base), COOalkyl, COalkyl, COHHalkyl, CON(alkyl)2 or CN and Y is phenyl, COOH, COOMe (Me as above), COOalkyl, or COalkyl group are suitable for the production of pastes, ointments and oil for protecting the skin against sunburn. Specified anti-fading agents have (1) X = CN, Y = COOH; (2) X = CN, Y = COONa; (3) X = CN, Y = COOC2H5; (4) X = COOH = Y; (5) X = COONa = Y; (6) X = COOCH3 = Y; (7) X = COONH3C6H11 = Y; (8) X = COONH3C4H9 = Y; (9) X = COONH3C18H37 = Y; (10) X = COOH, Y = C6H5; (11) X = COONa, Y = C6H5; (12) X = COOCH3, Y = C6H5; (13) X = COCC2H5, Y = C6H5; (14) X = COOC3H7, Y = C6H5; (15) X = COOC4H9(iso), Y = C6H5; (16) X = COOC5H11(iso), Y = C6H5; (17) X = COOCH2CH(OH)CH3, Y = C6H5; (18) X = COOCH2CH(OH)CH2CH2OH, Y = C6H5; (19) X = COCH3, Y = C6H5; (20) X = CONHCH2CH2OH, Y = C6H5; (21) X = COOH = Y while the phenyl group has a chlorine in the ortho position; and (22) X = COOC2H5 = Y, again with an ortho chlorine.
