A fan heater comprises a casing 1 having a main air duct 2 which houses a heater 5 and an electric motor driven fan impeller 4 and is provided with an aperture 9 at the outlet side of the fan so that an auxiliary air stream is induced to flow through inlets 14 in the casing and over a temperature control 10. Thus, under normal conditions the said temperature control is subjected to air at room temperature and is shielded from the heater 5, while should blockage of the outlet grill 8 occur, hot gas from the duct 2 flows back over the control 10 which then cuts off the current to the heater. The duct 2 is provided with a constriction 12 at which the aperture 9 is located.
