A conveyer belt 9 is driven by an endless driving member comprising a pair of endless wire ropes 1 interconnected by transverse perpendicular or diagonal ropes 2, 2a on which the belt rests. The ropes 1 are supported on driving pulleys 3 carried by end frames 4, and on rollers or groups of pulleys 5 carried by intermediate frames 6, 6a. Associated with the rollers or groups of pulleys 5 are further pulleys or groups of pulleys 5a for supporting the centre of the belt. The belt is additionally driven by pulleys 10 on the end frames 4. The pulleys 5 may also be driven.
