946,703. Expanding-wheel gear. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. April 19, 1961 [May 17, 1960], No. 14208/61. Heading F2D. In an expanding V-belt variable speed gear in a vehicle, output torque responsive adjustment of a driven pulley comprising halves 2, 3 respectively axially movable and fixed is effected by axial thrust of an input pinion 9 of single-helical toothed gearing 9, 10 serially arranged between the pulley 2, 3 and an output shaft 11, the pinion 9 being connected to the axially movable half 2 through spring means or, as shown, directly. The pulley half 2 is axially guided on pins 6 connected to, or integral with, the half 3 which is ball-journalled in a housing 5 of the toothed gearing. A spring 7 urges the pulley halves 2, 3 together. The face width of the gear-wheel 10 is greater than that of the pinion 9 to maintain engagement. A motor-driven expanding driving pulley 20 may be spring-loaded or have speed responsive adjustment.
